Our first Burundi coffee comes to us from the Businde Washing Station in the Matongo commune of northern Burundi, specifically within the Butanyerera province. This award winning washing station (previous Cup of Excellence winner) creates unique collectives while holding high standards for the coffees that are processed through their facility. In response to their success, the washing station assist farmers with coffee seedlings, natural fertilizers in the form of coffee pulp and financial incentives to improve the coffee farming methods used in these highland areas. The washing station pays their workers nearly 60% above the standard labor rate for the region and always buy the harvested coffees at well above Fair Trade standards.
This particular coffee is grown on the slopes of Gitwe, a large coffee producing hill with multiple family farms that sits on the Rwanda/Burundi border. Sitting on the slopes above the Kibira Rainforest makes a microclimate especially perfect for the premium coffee varietals grown here.
Your first sips will have you tasting tea like herbal and floral notes with subtle tart berries and a hint of lime or unripened citrus.
